Comments | The timings given here are based on a composite of the AUD and SBD tapes. Garcia plays pedal steel guitar on the first 3 tunes. On the AUD tape Green Grass cuts in on "as I step down from the train." In the pause after Green Grass Jerry says with droll mock sarcasm "And you thought you were gonna hear rock and roll." -- probably Green Grass opened the set. In the pause after Sawmill Jerry Teases Me And My Uncle repeatedly, but after a splice they play Seasons Of My Heart instead and when they do come around to Me And My Uncle, it's without the pedal steel. In the pause after Seasons Garcia shifts to electric guitar and they "test the monitors;" in the lengthy pause before Boss Man they again try to get the monitors working properly; Bobby remarks on the "jury-rigged house PA," observing that "I hate to point the incriminating finger but I wish he'd leave his shit home." We are fortunate to have a fairly decent AUD tape of the first hour of this show, since the circulating SBD is rather cut up, with an additional 40 seconds missing from the beginning of Green Grass, nearly a minute missing from the end of Sawmill, 30 seconds lost from the beginning of Seasons, 15 seconds clipped from the beginning of Big Boss Man, Hard To Handle missing entirely, and 45 seconds clipped from the beginning of Cold Rain And Snow. On the other hand the circulating AUD breaks off after the first 4 seconds of Uncle John's Band, while the SBD carries on into Good Lovin'. For reference and comparison here is a timing of the circulating SBD: Green Green Grass of Home [#3:39] ; [0:11] % [0:21] ; Sawmill [2:49#] % [0:06] % Seasons Of My Heart [#3:14] ; [2:01] ; China Cat Sunflower [3:11] > Jam [2:34] > I Know You Rider [4:15] > High Time [6:55] ; [0:31] % Big Boss Man [#4:45] ; [0:30] ; Me And My Uncle [3:11] ; [0:07] % Cold Rain And Snow [#4:46] > Uncle John's Band ... (timings from here on as above). Compared with Friday's total of 115 minutes and Sunday's of 138, the 85 minutes of Saturday 2/7/70 preserved on tape seems obviously to fall short by at least a half hour. Obviously we are missing several tunes from the end of this set. Taj Mahal and Bigfoot were also on the bill (DeadBase IX).
