Comments David Lemieux has given an interview to the Music Box in which he revealed all regarding Dick's Picks #22, which was recorded at this run of shows. There were 6 or 7 reels (10 inch reels at 15 ips, two track quarter inch tape). Disc #1 from Dick's Picks #22 is probably from 2/23/68 and disc #2 is probably from 2/24/68. What we have are not the complete shows, since a couple of repeated songs and songs with splices in them were left off. (1) the that's it For the Other one suite and New Potato Caboose are without Billy. (2) After New Potato, Phil says, "If Bill Kreutzman will just come back up on the stage and play some more music with us, I promise never to say anything nasty about him." Billy has recalled he had been skiing all day and was tired, so he sat out for a few minutes. (3) this Alligator is included as part of track #7 (listed as the Eleven) on Dick's Picks #22. It begins at 5:53 on the timer and runs to 7:00. (4) this Drums overlaps tracks #7 (listed as the Eleven) and track #8 (listed as Alligator) on Dick's Picks #22. It begins at 7:00 and runs for the last 16 seconds of track #7, and goes up to 3:34 in track #8. Within track #8, "Alligator runnin' round my door" vocals begin at 1:37 and Jerry joins in with an Alligator solo at 2:40. (5) Alligator itself begins full force at 3:43 in track #8. At 5:12 Jerry is playing the AWBYGN theme. (6) Pigpen: "That mojo worked pretty good." David Lemieux also confirms that a part of Feedback from 2/24/68 was used on Anthem of the Sun. He said to listen for the siren sound heard at about 3:17 on disc #2 of Dick's Picks #22 in order to find it. Although the packageing material for the Grayfolded CD set states that a Dark Star from 2/24/68 was sampled, it was the version on CD 1 of Dick's Picks #22 - and that disc is believed to probably be from 2/23/68.
Recordings 79 SB (Dick's Picks #22, disc 2), and sampled for Anthem of the Sun. John Oswald used a portion of this Dark Star in his Greyfolded project. Tapes of 02/14/68 set I often circulate with this date.
