| Comments | There are two reels of Grateful Dead from this show in the vault and the newly circulating tape contains their complete contents as listed here, except that the first reel opens with a snippet of the end of High Time. This Dark Star features the earliest known "Feelin Groovy" Jam or "Bridge" Jam. The Eleven analyzes St. Stephen > 1st vocast 1:09 > transition Jam 0:15# % + #1:18 > Eleven Jam 3:48 > Eleven vocals 0:42 > Eleven Jam 2:01 > Eleven 2nd theme transition 0:13 > Turn On Your Love Light. Responding to the applause after Turn On Your Love Light Bill Graham says: "We may be a little prejudiced but let's get one thing said -- on any given night, the very greatest rock and roll band in the world, The Grateful Dead." He goes on to introduce Stephen Stills, who plays on Turn On Your Love Light. The old cassette copy of this show contains Dark Star through the William Tell vocals at the beginning of The Eleven. The snippet of Good Lovin' which follows this on some copies of this side does not belong to this date. On the other side of this cassette are six tunes from a Jefferson Airplane set from this date (Somebody To Love, Young Girl Sunday Blues, Wooden Ships, Volunteers, Saturday Afternoon, Uncle Sam's Blues). On the old cassette Dark Star is preceded by a count off and a 1-note false start from Phil, followed by a second count off. This is clipped on the newly circulating copy. According to DeadBase IX before Dark Star they played Good Lovin' ; Me & My Uncle ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Casey Jones ; High Time. Reportedly it is not presently in the vault (12/99). Eaton lists a 28 minute SBD reel excerpt from this date, perhaps containing these tunes. Jefferson Airplane and Sons of Champlin were also on the bill. Sons of Champlin probably opened. If these are two sets then it may mean that the Dead and the Airplane played two sets each, taking turns. DeadBase IX lists Hot Tuna as well, though they do not appear on the poster for the show ; their set could have been one of the Airplane sets, or part of one of these sets.
