Comments | Pigpen was absent. This show has circulated for years mislabeled "10/13/68", but it's really 10/12/68. It wasn't FM broadcast live, but there was a mid-1970's KSAN broadcast of this show (up through the Jam after New Potato) and that is the source of the "10/13/68" tapes. Dick Latvala found the master reel in the vault of the complete set 2, which was not in circulation till recently. Dick has said that this is one of his favorites and he calls it "primal Dead". (1) Before Dark Star: Jerry says "Hold onto your bodies and relax, everybody. Everybody relax for crissakes, everybody just cool it. Everything's gonna be alright. We're gonna play here until, until uh, until we drop." Then Bobby says off mic "you won't remember." The timed copy has Bobby saying: "Ok, we're gonna do a, we're gonna do a elementary dance number now. It's a foxtrot and it's also a ladies' choice. and uh..." Jerry then says off mic "no, not gonna dance", followed by Dark Star without an audible splice. Different versions of this show have one, or the other, or both of these pieces of banter. Some also have a KSAN announcer's lines spliced in as well. Dark Star: verse 1 at 4:28; Dark Star theme at 8:03; Climax at 10:30; Birth of a Star (a.k.a. Telstar) at 11:46; verse 2 at 13:24. After "one man gathers what another man spills" in Saint Stephen, Bobby says "funniest thing I ever heard". Death Don't: there is a neat splice at 0:12, right at beginning of first verse. (2) Jerry says "We're gonna, uh, we're gonna just, uh, just stop for about five minutes, and uh, get our hands dry. and then we're gonna play some more. But, but in the meantime, you can do whatever you like, while we're, while we're waiting around." (3) the Drums following the 13 Jam ends with distinct Phil bomb (a la Other one). (4) there are Caution motifs during the Jam, but no real Caution Jam. |
